Whiplash and Car Accident Injury Care in De Pere, WI

Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a sudden movement of the head, often during a vehicle collision, fall, or sports impact. Symptoms can begin right away or develop hours or days later. A timely evaluation helps determine whether medical care or imaging is needed.

At Back In Action Chiropractic Center, Dr. Steven Hansen reviews the event, your symptoms, and relevant health history before considering conservative care. Significant trauma, neurological changes, or possible head injury must be assessed appropriately before routine chiropractic treatment.

Neck and upper back

What Is Whiplash?

Whiplash describes a rapid back-and-forth or other forceful movement of the neck that can strain muscles, ligaments, joints, and related tissues. Common symptoms include neck pain, stiffness, reduced movement, upper-shoulder discomfort, and headache. Some people also notice arm tingling, numbness, or weakness. The force that caused the injury matters because fractures, dislocations, concussion, and nerve or spinal cord injury can initially resemble a less serious strain.

Your questions, your goals

Symptoms to Discuss After a Neck Injury

After urgent injuries have been ruled out, a focused evaluation can address symptoms such as:

  • Neck pain or stiffness that began after a collision or fall
  • Reduced comfortable range of motion
  • Aching through the upper shoulders or upper back
  • Headache that began after the neck injury
  • Symptoms that appeared hours or days after the event
  • Arm tingling, numbness, or weakness that needs medical screening

Seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening pain, new weakness or numbness, trouble walking or sitting upright, an electric-shock sensation into the arms or legs, loss of coordination, confusion, repeated vomiting, loss of consciousness, or other possible concussion signs. Call emergency services for severe symptoms.

Your Visit at Back In Action

Injury Details and Health History

We review how the incident happened, the direction of force, when symptoms began, prior neck concerns, and any medical evaluation already completed.

Dr. Hansen checks comfortable movement and relevant musculoskeletal and neurological findings while avoiding unnecessary stress on a recently injured area.

Head Injury and Red-Flag Screen

Possible concussion, fracture, spinal cord injury, or worsening neurological symptoms require medical assessment before routine conservative care.

Records and Imaging Review

Bring emergency or medical reports and existing images. Further imaging is recommended only when clinically appropriate to answer a specific question.

Plan and Progress Review

If conservative care is appropriate, Dr. Hansen explains the plan and monitors pain, movement, nerve symptoms, and daily function over time.

Care after a sudden injury

A Complete Approach to Whiplash

Whiplash care begins with injury severity and safety. The next step may be medical evaluation, modified activity, or conservative chiropractic care for an appropriate musculoskeletal presentation. There is no single protocol for every collision. The force involved, examination findings, symptoms, and response over time guide the recommendation.

Why back in action

What Matters in a Post-Collision Evaluation

Delayed Symptoms Count

Pain and stiffness may appear later, so the timeline from the event through the present visit is reviewed carefully.

Trauma Changes the Screen

The mechanism and force raise different safety questions than neck pain that began gradually.

Neurological Signs Need Attention

Weakness, numbness, balance changes, and electric-shock sensations may require urgent medical evaluation.

Care Is Adjusted to Findings

Any conservative approach should reflect comfort, tissue irritability, health history, and the results of appropriate medical assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Whiplash FAQs

Can whiplash symptoms start later?

Yes. Neck pain, stiffness, headache, and other symptoms may appear hours or even days after an injury. Delayed symptoms still deserve attention, especially when they are worsening or include numbness, tingling, weakness, or balance problems.

Should I be checked after a collision if I feel fine?

A medical evaluation may be appropriate after significant trauma because some injuries are not obvious immediately. The need depends on the force, symptoms, health factors, and any head or neurological signs. When in doubt, contact an appropriate medical professional.

Will I need an X-ray or MRI?

Not every whiplash injury needs imaging. A clinician may recommend it when the injury mechanism, examination, or symptoms raise a specific concern. X-rays show bone well, while CT or MRI may be chosen for other questions.

Can chiropractic care help after whiplash?

Some people with an appropriately screened musculoskeletal injury may be candidates for conservative chiropractic care. Treatment is not automatic after a collision. Fracture, concussion, nerve injury, spinal cord concerns, and other serious conditions must be addressed first.

What symptoms need urgent medical care?

Seek urgent care for severe pain despite usual pain medicine, tingling on both sides, trouble walking or sitting upright, an electric-shock feeling into the limbs, or arm or leg weakness. Possible concussion signs or loss of consciousness also need medical attention.

What should I bring to a whiplash evaluation?

Bring a medication list, relevant history, and any emergency, imaging, or medical reports. Note when each symptom began, how it changed, what affects it, and any new headache, dizziness, numbness, or weakness.
