Sciatica and Leg Pain Chiropractic Care in De Pere, WI
Leg pain can begin in the back, hip, joints, muscles, nerves, or circulation, so its location does not always reveal the source. At Back In Action Chiropractic Center, Dr. Steven Hansen starts with your history and a focused examination before discussing care.
Pain that travels from the low back or buttock into the leg may involve a nerve. The first visit helps clarify the pattern, screen for concerns needing medical attention, and identify a sensible next step.

What Is Leg Pain and Sciatica?
Leg pain is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. It may feel aching, sharp, burning, cramping, or electric. Sciatica describes symptoms along the sciatic nerve, often from the buttock down one leg and sometimes into the foot. Tingling, numbness, or weakness may occur when a lower-spine nerve root is irritated or compressed. Muscles, joints, injuries, and circulation problems can also cause leg discomfort, which is why an examination matters.
Your questions, your goals
Leg Symptoms We Can Evaluate
A consultation may be useful when leg symptoms appear connected to movement or the lower back. Tell us about the full pattern, including:
- Pain traveling from the low back or buttock into one leg
- Tingling or pins-and-needles sensations in the leg or foot
- Numbness or altered sensation that comes and goes
- Burning or electric pain affected by position or movement
- Recurring leg discomfort that limits walking or daily activity
- Leg symptoms that began after a strain or other minor injury
Leg pain is not always musculoskeletal. Sudden one-sided swelling, warmth, redness, or unexplained calf pain needs prompt medical assessment for a possible blood clot. New bladder or bowel trouble, numbness around the groin or buttocks, or severe or worsening weakness in both legs requires emergency evaluation.

What to expect
Your Visit at Back In Action
Consultation and Symptom History
We discuss where the pain begins, where it travels, what changes it, and how it affects daily activity.
Focused Back and Leg Exam
Dr. Hansen evaluates movement and relevant musculoskeletal and nerve findings to better understand the pattern of your symptoms.
Safety Screening
Your history and exam help identify warning signs that call for urgent care, testing, or another provider.
Personalized Recommendations
If conservative care is appropriate, Dr. Hansen explains its role and reasonable alternatives. Imaging is considered only when clinically appropriate.
Progress Review
Your symptoms and function are reviewed over time. A lack of progress or a change in the pattern may lead to a revised plan or referral.
A thoughtful path forward
A Complete Approach to Leg Pain
Good leg-pain care begins with the cause that best fits the evidence, not a one-size-fits-all label. Recommendations may include conservative chiropractic care, movement guidance, or coordination with a medical professional. If the examination suggests that your symptoms fall outside the clinic’s scope, Dr. Hansen can explain why another evaluation is the safer next step.

Frequently asked questions
Leg Pain FAQs
Is all leg pain sciatica?
No. Sciatica describes pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness following a nerve-related pattern from the lower back or buttock into the leg. Joint, muscle, vascular, and medical problems can cause similar discomfort.
What can cause sciatic symptoms?
A lumbar nerve root may be irritated or compressed by a disc problem, age-related narrowing, or another spinal condition. Symptoms alone do not establish the cause. History, examination, and appropriate testing guide that decision.
Will I need imaging?
Not necessarily. Many leg-pain evaluations begin with a history and physical examination. Dr. Hansen may review existing images or recommend imaging when the findings raise a specific question that imaging can help answer.
Can chiropractic care help leg pain?
Some people with musculoskeletal or spine-related symptoms may be candidates for conservative chiropractic care. Leg pain has many causes, and no treatment is right for every cause. An examination is required before Dr. Hansen can make a recommendation.
When should leg pain be checked urgently?
Get emergency care for new bladder or bowel trouble, groin or buttock numbness, or worsening weakness in both legs. Seek prompt care for one-sided leg swelling, warmth, redness, or unexplained calf pain. Call emergency services if leg symptoms occur with chest pain or shortness of breath.
What should I bring to my visit?
Bring a current medication list, relevant medical history, and any recent reports or images you already have. Be ready to describe when the symptoms started, where they travel, and which positions or activities make them better or worse.
